Professor Ido Strauss

Prof. Ido Strauss

Prof. Ido Strauss is the Head of the Neurosurgery Department at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov Hospital).

He also serves as the director of the Functional Neurosurgery Unit and the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Service in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov Hospital). And a senior lecturer at the Tel Aviv University.

Prof Strauss specializes in neurosurgical procedures to modulate neural pathways in the brain and spinal cord to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders. Specifically in movement disorder surgery, epilepsy surgery and neurosurgical procedures to modulate or disconnect pain pathways in the central nervous system.

Co-director of the inter-disciplinary clinic for refractory pain in cancer patients. The clinic evaluates cancer patients from all over Israel, who have failed all other “conventional” treatments and are suffering from intractable pain due to cancer. Appropriate patients are offered innovative neurosurgical interventions to disconnect the pain pathways in the spinal cord or modulate the pain perception in the brain neural-networks

Areas of Expertise:

Prof Strauss areas of expertise include surgical treatments for patients with various functional disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems, including:

  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for movement disorders (such as Parkinson's, essential tremor, dystonia)
  • Surgeries for drug-resistant epilepsy
  • Craniotomies for brain tumors
  • Stereotactic robot assisted brain biopsy (using the ROSA robot)
  • Neurosurgical interventions for intractable cancer pain (percutaneous RF cordotomy & stereotactic cingulotomy)
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery for brain tumors and trigeminal neuralgia

He completed his medical studies at the Hadassah Medical Center and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in the MD/PhD integrated research program. Following that,  he specialized in neurosurgery at Sorasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv. After completing residency, he continued to pursue a fellowship in Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

He is focused on treating and performing surgeries for complex cases of drug-resistant epilepsy, various functional disorders (such as Parkinson's, dystonia, tremor, intractable pain, and psychiatric disorders) originating from brain structures, including surgeries involving seizures.

Since 2014, he has been a senior neurosurgeon in the neurosurgery department at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

Since 2017, the director of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Service

In 2019, he was appointed as the head of the Functional Neurosurgery Unit.

Since 2025, Prof Strauss Heads the adult neurosurgery Department in Ichilov.

Uniquely in Israel, performs MRI-guided laser surgeries for ablating epileptic foci and brain tumors at Ichilov, as well as stereotactic brain biopsies using the specialized ROSA robot.

Additionally, specializes in minimally invasive treatments for uncontrollable cancer pain, aiming to disrupt pain pathways in the spinal cord and brain to alleviate suffering.

Member of the Israeli Neurosurgical Association and serves as a Board Director for the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN).
